Happiness and knowledge are like butter, they’re great but always better when you spread them around.
I love teaching, talking shop, and getting others involved. Of course I have deep love and passion for photography. It has made me appreciate life more than I probably would have if I had chosen a different career path. I also realize there are others out there with different situations and levels in life. I want to help in any way possible.
This is not me saying I know all or should be the force to listen to. Hah not at all. I am saying that I have learned a handful of things along the way that could help others bypass some trial and errors. I have been asked if I ever hire interns or assistants in any way for shoots and in my business. Totally. Hands down. Like I said, I love teaching and getting others involved. (OH p to the s, be sure to check out THIS BLOG POST I WROTE before asking to help a photographer) You’ll notice that I do want people to have previous experience and knowledge (for consistency purposes) but I can still help out with teaching you what I know and do. Setting up lights, grabbing my labeled lenses, moving stands around are all super teachable things that take seconds. Personality…well, that’s all on you. And that’s probably JUST as important.
All applicants should send their resume to [email protected].
Here are a few positions and their descriptions of roles that would be an AWESOME asset to the biz:
What it is
You are behind the scenes on the computer, tweaking the lil things in post! This will mostly include portraits, engagement sessions, Corporate events, and other part day shoots. All images will already be loaded into a catalog and picked for you to edit, you just need to edit the chosen ones. HA chosen ones…
What you need
- A computer. That works well.
- Decent internet access. I send out files via dropbox and it is super handy.
- Lightroom. I mean, you gotta know the tools and what each thing does. Photoshop would be a PLUS, but not super required.
- Samples of stuff you’ve edited to show that you’re not insane with distracting edits, but clearly showing that your eye isn’t dead.
- You WILL get my presets in lightroom to use. This is pretty much a requirement too, as it will keep things perfectly consistent. Not only for consistency, but it really makes it easier.
Frequency
This is a pay per image role, per shoot.
What it is
Shooting with me, buddies for the day, capturing different scenes or angles at the same time. EXCITING! It’s a lot of hard work, but I promise I make it worthwhile. There’s a lot of requirements, but it’s really nothing surprising. No editing required.
What you need
- Car, appropriate clothing (suits/vests for dudes and nice/fun dress/skirts for ladies is a plus), and awesome attitude.
- An online gallery/website of your work. Obviously. I want to see your pretty pictures.
- Professional photography experience in that field for at least a year. I want to know that you’ve done this before on your own so I don’t have to worry about ya.
- Professional grade gear: AT LEAST one pro camera and a backup. (Pro doesn’t just mean SLR) because my style comes A LOT from shooting with prime lenses, that has found its way to my “need to haves” list. If you use Canon, that will only help you as you can always use a lens or two of mine when needed. If you use Nikon, gah you better be awesome…
- Understanding of your gear. You must and should have the ability to shoot in manual mode. No questions. Especially when it comes to weddings, this is something that should never ever ever be an obstacle. You should know your stuff forwards and backwards(only backwards because I like to mix things up and make it weird sometimes).
- Extra energy. I like to keep it moving, be efficient, and a good steward of other people’s time. Serious.
Frequency
This is a per shoot basis, and pay per shoot. Sometimes there are hourly events available, but mostly it is per event. These will be planned ahead of time. I am also more picky with who would fit with what shoot, so this will not be as “first come first serve” as the shoot assistant role is.
What it is
You are on a shoot alllll by yourself. I am not there. You may have some of my gear, or even a tie of mine. Regardless, it’s all you baby. …And maybe a shoot assistant too. No editing required.
What you need
- Same as 2nd Photographer. Obviously. Clothes. Attitude. Energy. Knowledge of gear. Online gallery. Yep.
- More experience than 2nd photographer requirement. Having your own photography business for multiple years. You’ve been around this sort of thing for a while, and you still can’t get enough of it….wanting more. MMmmm.
- Two pro cameras and two prime lenses. Obviously the more the merrier. I like to keep the style consistent, and prime lenses is the way to go.
- Personality. We are all unique, given many fun quirks and ticks. Some more itchy than others. Imagery should be the same high quality look and feel, but you need to make the shoot fun however you know best. Like I said above, I can’t teach or guide what makes your gears turn. All I ask is that when you photograph someone, they feel like they could be president of this earth. No pressure or anything.
Frequency
This is also a per shoot basis. Because this is a fairly new role, it will obviously be less frequent at first. I am very excited to have this career available to not only educate and promote fun photography to shooters, but to make sure people are not missing out on an experience. I love weddings, but it drives me nuts about how I can’t serve and deliver high quality imagery to more than one couple per calendar day. No more.
